Current Programmes and Activities of the CCS

Water and Sanitation Project
Pwani CCS has mobilized communities living in arid areas to expand water dams. Twelve villages have been involved in the excavation of the water dams. Pwani CCS has provided the hand tools, technical and other necessary support during the excavation exercise. A total of 30 dams have been excavated. As a result, women and children who have been walking up to 30 kms to fetch water are now walking for 30 minutes to fetch the commodity.

Five long lasting dams have also been constructed in Mwakala, Mereni, Mbogolo, Kathongo and Chapung at a cost of one million Kshs each.

The rainwater collected in these dams is usually dirty. Communities have been sensitized on the need to boil water for domestic use. They have also been sensitized on the need to dig pit latrine and rubbish pits to avoid contaminating the harvested water with human waste. Community health worker one from each village has been trained.

Food Security Programme
• Pwani CCS hired an agriculturist to train the communities on farming methodologies.
• Workshops on gender have also been held at community levels, which as a result men have become supportive in working in the farms.
• As a result of the training,
• Harvests are increasing
• Hot culture has been introduced and earning communities some income as well as adding nutrition value to them.
• Highly nutritious drought resistant crops like amaranth have been introduced
• Dryers have been introduced for drying vegetables in preservation for use in dry season.
• Metal Silos for storing harvests for long period have been availed to the communities at affordable cost.

The Pwani CCS and communities have established Farmers Field Schools also known as Research Centers (Schools without walls). Best farming practices are carried out in these fields and communities replicated the same in their individual farms.

Economic Empowerment
Pwani CCS in conjunction with the government has introduced improved breeds of goats to the communities. Communities are able to breed and selling the new Gala breed at better prices compared to the old local breeds.

Exotic chicken has also been introduced. The poorest of the poor have been identified in the communities and each family given 3 hens, a cock and a basket like cage to contain the hatched chicken so that eagles and other animals do not eat them when they are growing. The above group is then required to breed the chicken so that they can power themselves economically. The result has been remarkably good.

Community Animal Assistants whose role is to administer first aid to the animals have been trained one from each village.

HIV-AIDS Programme
One of the main reasons that the HIV Programme was introduced is because of the high burial rate in communities that affected programme activities, and the increase of orphans in the community. The following are the main activities in HIV-AIDS Programme;

a) Good News Club
Pwani CCS has mobilized 80 HIV-AIDS orphans aged between 5 – 10 years to nature them spiritually and help them grow responsibly. The orphans and their children friends meet every Saturday and are usually coordinated by Sunday school teachers. Among many activities of the club, each orphans has been given a goat, hen and six mango trees to plant. Guardians have been used to help the children take care of the above gifts. This is intended to help the children grow up appreciating agriculture and livestock keeping as well as improving environment. It has also been a way of fighting stigma.

b) The Youth
Ten parish priests have been trained in peer education with HIV-AIDS message to pass to the youth and others.

Facilitators and Animators have also been trained and are training the on HIV-AIDS. Both Primary and Secondary abstinence has been the key approach to the training.

c) Coast Churches HIV-AIDS Intervention
Pwani CCS organized an Interdenominational workshop that was attended by leaders from 16 different denominations in Cost Region. The leaders discussed maters related to HIV- AIDS and formed a forum known as Coast Churches HIV-AIDS Intervention. Committee members are drawn from all the Churches represented. The forum is to help all denominations put their efforts together to fight HIV-AIDS in the region.
