Production and training unit
Training students then they go and operate on their own.
Tannery initially focusing on women they were trained able to make products and sell them within and without the country
Breeding programmes – ranchers bred their animals to higher levels
MRTC is registered with the Kenya Stud Book (Owners of Registered Stud book).
Many of the students trained at the centre are employed at the Ranches and many hold managerial positions in those ranches. They have been able to train people from across the country and outside the country like southern Sudan class students
They breed animals which fetch good prices in the market and during the shows where they get awards.
STI/HIV/AIDS prevention and care
While the core business of CCS is mainly to address improvement of standard of living for target communities, they have mainstreamed HIV/AIDS activities in the main programs and in health activities mainly mobiles services where thy advice people on VCT and prevention. They have a trained HIV/AIDS counsellor trained through DOSS programs. They also have an elaborate youth outreach program.
Challenges
Endemic livestock diseases due to poor management levels.
The community is not seeing the institution as a service provider but saying that it is a profit making institution.
Challenge from NGOs giving community member (participants token)
Lack of funds to sponsor students from the community.
Lack of funds to employ expatriates thus salaries are not competitive.
Insufficient level of sustainability at community and organizational level
Documentation of project processes and experiences not properly articulated
HIV/AIDS – both affected and infected slow down development activities.
High demand of services by the communities but few material and human resource to address them.
Severe drought in the catchments area.
Large area of coverage
Area being prone to drought and water problems hence recording high mortalities (death rates)
Community is eyeing the 2000 acres from the ranch.
