Current Programmes and Activities of the CCS

CCS Mt. Kenya East programmes are divided in has two:

1. Development Programme and Activities

The purpose of the integrated programme is to empower the marginalized and poor communities throughout the Mt. Kenya East region to participate and be in control of their own development in a wholistic and sustainable way.

In a nutshell, the integrated programme has the following sectors:-

  1. Health programme: - Training and retraining of community health workers, Mobile clinic services, family planning services and formation and activation of village health committees. We also operate a Hospital and 9 Static dispensaries.
  2. HIV/AIDS programme: - Breaking the silence, PMTCT, BCC, mobile VCT services, care and support for people with AIDS and OVC, and provision of ARVs.
  3. Food Increase Programme :- Trainings covering topics like; crop production, organic farming, intercropping, small scale irrigation etc. we also have field demonstration farms in the communities and farmer field schools and livestock demonstration units in the communities.
  4. Environment: - tree nurseries in the development stations and in the communities.
  5. Social groups are mobilized in tree planting and cleaning towns.
  6. Social services: - response to emergencies e.g. famine.
  7. Hospitality: - hostels.

2. Sustainability Programme .

The Sustainability projects operate in all the stations across the region. The main objectives of these projects include;

•  Providing appropriate and affordable Information Technology (IT) skills to young people in order for them to be IT compliant.

•  Complementing the existing health program by introducing more elaborate curative, preventative and promotive health care services.

The sustainability activities/enterprises are the following;

•  Clinic and laboratory services. This is in all the 8 stations.

•  ACK Mt. Kenya hospital. The hospital provides specialized services like Diabetes, MCH and Comprehensive HIV/AIDS care services. These services are provided in addition to all other in-patient and out-patient curative and preventive health care. The GoK has recognized this crucial role and donated an Ambulance to ACK Mt. Kenya Hospital and seconded a medical doctor to enhance its performance.

•  Farm, Livestock units and Agro-vets stores. This is in all stations.

•  Others are computer classes and stationery shop.

These projects and the Hospital sustain their core activities and generate some surplus. The staff population in these enterprises totals to 86. The management of these projects is handled at different levels. The project staff and SDC at station level, and the management/monitoring committee and the Board at the regional level.

Because of the long drought, most of the farm related enterprises did not produce much yield and thus no surplus realized in 2005. However, it was very encouraging to see the school leavers and high school students accessing and advancing their knowledge and skills on IT in the rural areas for self-employment or developing their educational career.

Following is a list of the existing projects: -

Kerugoya
A health facility in Kerugoya , which offers curative services and maternal/ child health, care (MCH). A Communication Bureau, which offers secretarial, services and sells all types of stationery. And a computer college, which offers teaching services and sale of computers, mobile phones, other accessories and computer, servicing.

ACK Mt. Kenya Hospital
This is a fully-fledged hospital with paediatric wards, maternity, general and private wards and a morgue. It also offers counselling services.
