Nyanza region has an estimated population of about 4,246,969 according to the 1999 census. This population comprises of the Luo, Kisii, Luhya, Kuria and Suba. What is significant with this population is the high ratio of dependants, which is about 50% of the total population. The high dependency ratio is attributed to a number of factors including HIV/AIDS, which have led to increasing number of orphans who need care, shelter, food and clothing. IDCCS has stretched its resources in this endeavor, and subsequently, introduced HIV/AIDS and reproductive health programmes.
